Nearly two lakh admission forms sold by Delhi University

New Delhi: The Delhi University (DU) this year sold nearly 200,000 application forms for admissions to its undergraduate courses - more than three times the number of seats offered by the varsity. The sale of application forms, which began on May 28, culminated on Friday. "We sold 186,672 forms for undergraduate courses this year which is a phenomenal number. The total number of seats offered by the varsity is 54,000 - a good 5,000 more seats than last year," an official statement by the varsity said. Last year, the number of seats offered by DU was 49,000 and in 2008 it was 42,000. Of the total number of forms sold, 143,224 forms were filled and submitted to the university. As compared to 405 forms sold last year to physically handicapped students, 443 forms were sold and submitted this year. As Friday was the last date for sale and submission of forms, there was a last-minute evident rush.

Pawan Rana, 20, who came all the way from Sonepat in Haryana to submit his form, said, "I had a family function at home, so it was impossible for me to come earlier. That's why I came on the last day to submit my form." The first cut-off list for various courses in the colleges will be announced on June 22. The academic session will begin in July.

Vikram Vikas Das, a 19-year-old aspirant from Sikkim, said, "Now that I have submitted my form, the hunt for accommodation will begin, which, I fear, is going to be a harrowing experience". IANS
